White Tooth Dental Takeaways:
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that unfortunately has no cure: once you are diagnosed as having periodontal disease, it is a life-long diagnosis (like cardiovascular disease or diabetes) that we can manage and help get "stable" or into "remission", but it cannot be fully cured or reversed. It is a multifactorial disease with dry mouth (xerostomia), smoking, diabetes, and genetics being known to contribute to it's activity and severity.
One of the best tools we have to prevent and combat periodontal disease is making sure there is minimal bacteria in your mouth and gums, which is the main form of treatment we have. Should you be someone with more severe periodontal disease, the other treatment options mentioned may be recommended by your dentist and/ or periodontist ("gum specialist") to help manage the effects. There are other treatment options being researched (such as antibiotics or immuno-modulation), but they are not proven as yet.
