Root canal treatment allows us to prolong the life of your tooth. In order to maximize the success of the root canal, a crown or “cap” is often recommended after a tooth is root canaled - we will discuss whether or not this is recommended for your tooth. A root canal is necessary to save a tooth when its nerve dies or becomes irreversibly inflamed. It is done by opening a little hole in the top of the tooth and using little files to remove the necrotic or inflamed nerve tissue. Then the tooth is disinfected and filled with a rubber material to seal the area in and prevent future infection. Root canal treatment allows your tooth to be saved and eliminates the need for more costly procedures such as dental implants.
